Thu, 19 Apr 2012 10:10:10 -0800WeeblyThu, 12 Apr 2012 08:28:42 -0800http://www.higganumvisiongroup.org/1/post/2012/04/higganum-vision-group-receives-grant-for-trails.htmlHVG was recently awarded a $1500 grant from the Rockfall Foundation, intended to develop awareness for the extensive trails network within the Town of Haddam. Haddam has nearly 50 miles of trails and 42 trailheads on State, public and private lands. Trails within Haddam are operated by various organizations which include the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, The Haddam Land Trust and the local School District. Unfortunately, because there are few easily accessible maps or trail markers, many of these trails are not widely known. 

The long-term goal of HVG is to place a small sign near each trailhead to identify the trail and the land owner, and provide a link to a single website of trail information.  Funds from the Rockfall Foundation will kick-start this trail-marking process by funding signs for 3 prominent trailheads, and the building and launch of the website.  

The Rockfall Foundation supports environmental education, conservation programs and planning initiatives in Middlesex County. Established in 1935, it is one of Connecticut’s oldest environmental organizations whose mission is to be a catalyst — bringing people together and supporting organizations to conserve and enhance the county’s natural environment. Rockfall awards grants each year to organizations, schools and municipalities, and continues to hold and manage open space property in the county.

The highlight of the meeting will be a presentation by Brian Thompson, Civil Engineer and Westport Water Pollution Control Authority Coordinator, who will discuss the Living Machine, a natural wastewater treatment system, and other viable wastewater treatment solutions. Some old and new HVG business will be discussed briefly, and refreshments will be served. All HVG meetings are open to the public, and all Haddam residents are encouraged to join the HVG. There is no fee for the meeting or for membership.

A bunch of us “regulars” have started a coffee co-op, a not-for-profit coffee shop featuring good friends, good laughs, good coffee.

The monthly donation fee is $30/month with a buy-in for at least three months. All nonmembers have a suggested donation per cup of $1.25.We’ll try this through the end of June and see where we are at.

Pass the word. Please submit membership fee to either Cherie, Rick or Missy to get us started.

If we don’t have enough interest and can’t get enough to cover costs than your money will be returned to you within one week.

Join the Haddam Historical Society for a bus tour of "Hoe Valley" along Candlewood Hill Road on Sunday, April 17, 2011 at 1 pm.  Led by Charles Farrow and John Edmundson the tour will focus on the D. & H. Scovil hoe manufacturing company which was one of Higganum's leading industries in the 19th century.  Started in 1844 the firm built several mill buildings along Candlewood Hill Brook and became one of the country's leading manufacturers of planters' hoes.  The tour will visit several of the sites learn about Higganum's role in establishing America as an industrial leader.
